About Garden School

Garden School was founded in 1923 to meet the need for a high-quality, independent school in Queens. This mission remains unchanged as the faculty and administration work to offer the student body the best possible education in an atmosphere where both individual goals and those of the community are respected and nurtured.

The Garden School course of study emphasizes strong basic skills, with challenge and discovery as part of the educational process. The co-curricular experience includes sports, drama, art, music, and a commitment to community service.

Stay Far Away

Posted by Aaroneet on 4/27/2009

I went to Garden School for my High School education. Since I had previously been to a private school, Highland Elementary, where the staff was dedicated and organized into a tight-knit community, I thought that this would be the logical Highland High School. It was far from it. Not only are the students largely unwilling to work, the college counselor is ill-informed at times, and the Geometry teacher for the non-advanced class is more concerned with his basketball team than actual academics. The Economics and Advanced Placement History teachers are insulting, not to mention that the former glorifies drinking and at times drug use to his students. He feels free to mock students from other schools, and often will jest about murder and suicide to convey his points. The Ancient and Medieval History teacher is pretentious, while the Chair of the English Department has been at the school so long that he doesn't feel the need to prove himself by doing his job. If you can find a parochial school, public school, or have the talent for a performing arts school, even if it's a little farther from your home, attend those instead. You'll save more than your money.

Definitely Worth a Look!

My son has been there for two years now and I'm continually amazed at how warm and confidence-building the place is. Nothing is perfect, but I'm impressed by the good-will and energy of the administration, especially when it comes to hearing out the suggestions of the parents, many of whom are incredibly smart and sophisticated.
